This classic DEFA 50s drama tells of young Germans who meet regularly in Berlin. Their story is told from social and economic perspectives, aspects that affect the entire population. When they have to flee from the police and one of them dies, they have to make a decision. Regarded as one of the best German films of all times, this film was criticized by many party officials for its negative portrayal of youth and life in East Germany. Film critics, however, praised its authenticity. After much debate, the film was released in August 1957 and attracted many viewers.
In August, 1992 a right wing mob launched a petrol bomb attack against a refugee hostel and a home for Vietnamese guest workers in the former East German port of Rostock. As the police stood by, thousands of ordinary people clapped and cheered. This documentary reconstructs the incident in detail, with footage shot at the time, and interviews with the attackers, their victims, local politicians and the police.
