Berlin, Schönhauser Corner

This classic DEFA 50s drama tells of young Germans who meet regularly in Berlin. Their story is told from social and economic perspectives, aspects that affect the entire population. When they have to flee from the police and one of them dies, they have to make a decision. Regarded as one of the best German films of all times, this film was criticized by many party officials for its negative portrayal of youth and life in East Germany. Film critics, however, praised its authenticity. After much debate, the film was released in August 1957 and attracted many viewers.

The Cazalets, Part 3

Adapted from the novels by Elizabeth Jane Howard, this BBC TV drama portrayals the life in postwar, wartime and postwar Britain through the story of the Cazalets, a large and privileged family transformed by the tumultuous times in which it lives. Set between 1937 and 1947, the story begins when the family gathers in its vast estate in Sussex for the annual summer holiday. The estate becomes a permanent residence once World War II breaks out. Three generations of Cazalets - grandparents, parents and children - migrate to the country, together with their pets, servants and problems.

Children Of A Vanished World

בין השנים 1935 - 1938 הצלם Roman Vishniac סקר ערים וכפרים במזרח אירופה ותיעד חיים יהודים בפולין, רומניה, רוסיה, הונגריה. קהילות שעמדו בפני איום. למרות שהשתמש גם במצלמה נסתרת ועבד לפעמים בתנאים קשים, Vishniac הצליח לצלם יותר מ-16,000 תצלומים, שרבים מהם שרדו את המלחמה. בסרט תעודי זה, המבוסס על ספר תצלומים באותו שם, מובאים תצלומים שנבחרו ונערכו ע"י בתו של של הצלם, Mara Vishniac Kohn על רקע Adagietto from Symphony 4 מאת Gustav Mahler. תמונות אלו תופסות את חיי היום יום של הדמויות המונצחות בהן ומראות ילדים משחקים, ילדים לומדים, ילדים בעולמם זמן קצר לפני שנחרב.
