Dramatic film about Max Baumstein, (Michel Piccoli), a well-known European human rights activist and avowed pacifist, who murders a politician from South America, and is tried for his crime. It turns out that his victim was a Nazi war criminal who ordered the deaths of thousands of people, including Baumstein's parents. Flashbacks reveal Max coping with the horrors of Nazi-occupied France, and Elsa Weiner, (Romy Schneider), who saved his life while struggling to free her husband Michel from a concentration camp. Throughout most of the 1930s and World War II, the United States government deliberately kept the influx of European Jews to America well below America’s official immigration quota for that part of the world. This policy, rooted in a variety of political concerns, as well as frequently transparent anti-Semitism left millions with no haven from the Nazi terror, and emboldened Hitler to transition from a policy of Jewish emigration to extermination.

While the young lovers are uninterested in politics, they find themselves unable to avoid the subject when the girl's parents lose their jobs due to the anti-Semitic purge and are forced to emigrate. The two do not want to leave each other , and they participate in a protest rally at the university where they discover freedom comes at a high price.

A feature film. Born in France in the 1920s, Simone Veil studied politics at Paris prestigious Sciences Po until she and her family were deported to the extermination camps during World War II. Though she lost her parents and a brother, Veil managed to survive both Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, an experience that taught her to fight and which would prepare her for her battles for women's rights in the decades ahead. After the war, she rose in the national government, becoming Chiracâ's minister of health in 1974 and the driving force behind a then controversial law to legalize abortion in France in the 1970s.
