The World - A Television History, The World In Conflict 1929-1945

The 1929 crash of the American stock market preceded a decade of worldwide depression in which the defeated nations of WWI seemed to suffer most. Germany turns to Hitler and his promises of regained glory and WWII begins. A three-cornered contest of democrats, Nazis and Communists for the future of the world leads, among other things, to Communist control of China. This episode in the BBC documentary series "Gladiators of WW2" focuses on the Waffen SS, the military wing of the Nazi Party under the command of Himmler. The Waffen SS evolved from the previously established Sturmabteilung (SA). With Hitler's rise to power, in 1933, concentration camp personnel were incorporated into the SS.
