A feature film. The story of John Rabe. Rabe was manager of Siemens China when the Japanese attacked the then capital Nanjing in 1937. Appalled by events and driven by simple humanitarian concerns, Rabe helped create a safety zone that’s said to have saved the lives of around 200,000 people.
During the years leading up to World War II, the citizens of Japan were encouraged to look upon their Emperor as a god. This divine loyalty to their leader was transferred to the battlefield, where soldiers and Kamikaze pilots were willing to fight to the death rather than face defeat or capture. As the allies gained the upper hand, the self-destructive tactics of the Japanese grew more extreme.
