Based on “The Death and Life of Dith Pran”, the 1980 New York Times article by Sydney Schanberg, a Pulitzer prize winner, this drama tells of the friendship between Schanberg and his Cambodian assistant, Dith Pran, during the Khmer Rouge and dictator Pol Pot Regime. The film begins in May 1973, in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. סרט מקור תיעודי. אלקה אברמוביץ' (לבית ריינס) נולדה בשנת 1932 בנובוסליצה שברומניה (כיום באוקראינה) למשפחה ציונית אורתודוקסית. בקיץ 1941, בהיותה בת תשע, גורשה יחד עם משפחתה ובני עיירתה אל טרנסניסטריה, שבדרום מערב אוקראינה. במהלך החודשים שבהם הוצעדו על ידי חיילים רומנים בתנאים פיזיים קשים ביותר, איבדה אלקה בני משפחה ומכרים. בחורף 1941 הובלו בני המשפחה אל "אורוות מוות" בכפר האוקראיני קושרניצה, כשהם בשארית כוחותיהם. שם נפטרו אמה של אלקה וסבה. עם השחרור, בקיץ 1944 , שבה אלקה עם אביה, אחותה ואחיה אל עיירתם, נובוסליצה, ומשם המשיכו בדרכם לארץ ישראל. במשך כשנתיים שהתה אלקה בבית יתומים יהודי בקלוז' שברומניה, עד שעלתה ארצה...
