After Germany occupied France in June 1940 and Jews faced the threat of arrest and deportation, Bert was hidden in the home of Madame Massonnet, living under a false identity until the end of the war. Madame Massonnet was later recognized as Righteous Among the Nations for her courageous actions.

Charlotte Salomon - Life and the Maiden
