Episode in a 26-part documentary series that presents a detailed survey of World War II. Episode 2 - "Distant War, September 1939 - May 1940": Germany invades Poland and bombs Warsaw until surrender. British prime minister Chamberlain is forced to prepare his country for conditions of war. Following the failure of British forces in Norway, the British government falls and is now led by Churchill. The Nazi occupation turns to countries of the lowlands and France. Includes archival films and testmonies. Narration by the British actor Laurence Olivier.
A docu-drama. The events at Dunkirk in May and June 1940. The Allies in northern France were in retreat, but the Navy only expects to be able to pick up a few soldiers and Churchill was under pressure to make peace in order to save the rest. Alf Tombs's unit helped hold open a corridor to aid the retreat, allowing thousands to escape over 48 hours.On the beaches a military officer made use of a flimsy pier to speed the evacuation. As the weather changes the pier and the beaches were bombed heavily.
