Uri Orlev was born in 1931 in Warsaw. Following the outbreak of World War II, Orlev and his family were sent to the Warsaw ghetto along with the rest of the Warsaw's Jews. To help cope with the harsh reality of life in the ghetto, Uri and his brother would make up imaginary stories.
