The director of the film Natan Gross, born in Krakov and one of the pioneers of Israeli cinema, is himself a victim of the Nazi experience. He managed to survive as a Christian Aryan by using forged papers. The film won the Interfilm Prize at the Berlin Festival in 1964 and was nominated for the festival's "Golden Bear" first prize.
