A segment of the PBS program Frontline that was broadcast in March 1995 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps. The film uses film footage cut from the original liberation film footage held in vaults in London largely since the end of the war and documents liberation scenes mainly from Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Bergen-Belsen, and Dachau. Many of the images are graphic in the extreme. Narration by British actor Trevor Howard.
This film is among the first documentary films about the Holocaust and one of the best known in the field of Holocaust cinema. Through an integration of archival films of the Nazi concentration camps and color photographs of the camps and their surroundings around 10 years after the war, the film presents the historical reality of the Final Solution in a direct and revelatory manner. Relative to its time "Night and Fog" was considered innovative in its universal and humanistic approach and it served as a source of inspiration for many documentary films about the Holocaust.
