A feature film. About the functioning of the black market in Berlin before the introduction of the German mark and the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, in 1948 and 1949, respectively. A man who has lived through the Third Reich and the war years. He makes a living on the black market. His son has returned blind from the war. The father must continue selling on the black market because he needs money to pay for medicine and medical care for his son. He gets the money, and his son’s eyesight is restored. Now the young man sees what his father is doing, resents his activity.
A documentary film animated by Daniela Sherer. Bringing oral history to life, moving visually from the present to the past. Irene Steinberg ,an 83 year old woman, recalls the events of one fateful night in her childhood, as she shares her wartime memories with her granddaughter Daniela Sherer.
This is the epic story with many threads. The series starts in september 1939, during the German invasion of Poland. It shows different reactions of polish people to this and to the later occupation. Some are resisting, some try to accomodate, some try to live as if nothing happened.
