A Documentary. The film explores the relationship of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution and their adopted city of Shanghai. Nearly 20,000 Jewish refugees fled Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II, to the Chinese port city of Shanghai. They developed an extraordinary relationship with their adopted city of Shanghai, even through the bitter years of Japanese occupation 1937-1945 and the Chinese civil war that followed.
Chiune Sugihara is a Japanese diplomat posted in Lithuania. He is also a world-class spy. In Lithuania he and his partner, Pesh, gather intelligence on European affairs. As WWII begins and Germany invades Poland, hordes of Jewish refugees flee to Lithuania. In search of transit visas, they turn to Sugihara who is torn between his loyalty to his country and his loyalty to mankind.
