A short documentary. The story of the Sinigaglia family told through photographs, historical films, letters, diaries, and the memories of their descendants. In 1938, the racial laws excluded them from society, and after September 8, 1943, finding themselves in danger of their lives, they were forced to attempt to flee to Switzerland. During these difficult years, they were helped by a diverse network of friends, strangers, colleagues, partisans, and especially by their maid – 'Clelia' – who had lived with them since 1934 and did not hesitate to risk her own safety to contribute to their salvation.
A short cocumentary. Calestano, a small village in the Parma mountains, was a destination for the free internment of Jews who arrived in Italy from abroad during World War II. After September 8th, when these Jews were at risk of their lives, the entire village mobilized to hide and help them.
A documentary film. Eighty years ago, the Italian people accepted the persecution of a minority which had been living in Italy for centuries. The film before us demonstrates how the implementation of racial laws affected Italian Jewry, and how the Jewish and non-Jewish population experienced racism and persecution. Through witness accounts and scholarly analysis, along with animated segments, 1938 - Diversi offers a new reading of this dramatic historical period, shedding light upon the role of mass media in one of the most tragic racial persecutions in the history of humankind.
