Filmmaker, historian, and author Raphael Delpard released this Documentary film, which focuses on the Jewish victims transported from France to Nazi concentration camps during World War II, in cattle car convoys operated by SNCF – the French national train company. Delpard himself was one of the fortunate few who survived the harrowing and unforgettable journey and subsequent imprisonment. He conveys the horrors of the experience through interviews with survivors as well as re-enactments of the actual events that took place.
These archival films, presented by Simon Veil, a Jewish French lawyer and politician, show scenes from the liberation of Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Ohrdruf, Nordhausen, Dachau, Mauthausen. Veil, born in 1927, was sent to Auschwitz in March 1944. She endured the hardships of the camp until its liberation in January 1945. After the war Veil served as the French Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs and also was the first President of the European Parliament. In 2005, sixty years after the liberation of Auschwitz, Veil gave testimony about the camp.
During the Second World War, more than 4,000 children were detained with their parents by the French police and locked up in camps Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande, near Orleans. They were separated from their parents by force. After two months spent in French camps in conditions of great poverty, these children were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The film tells the story of a tragedy.
