This West-German television film uses archive footage and dramatic reconstruction to tell the story of the events that took place between 30 June and 2 July 1934. On the night of 29-30 June 1934 (and the following two days) SS units were used by Hitler to exterminate the Nazi private army Sturm-Abteilung (SA) under Röhm. Others were also executed for alleged conspiracy against Hitler. The Nazi purge enabled Hitler to gain the acceptance of the German officer corps and, when President Hindenburg died 5 weeks later, to become head of state.
