The Red Orchestra

Movies
Based on the book by Gilles Perrault (1967), this spy drama tells the story of Leopold Trepper (1904-1982), a real life communist Polish Jew who set up espionage network in occupied Western Europe, which the Nazis named the "Red Orchestra." In 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo in Paris, but eventually escaped. On January 1945, by Stalin's orders, he was arrested in Moscow and put to prison. With his discharge, only after the dictator died, he involved himself in the cultural development of the Jewish community of Poland. Eventually, he chose emigration to Israel, which he was allowed to do only after three years of difficulties. He died in 1982 in Jerusalem.
