Set during the Nazi occupation of Northern France, when food and fuel are scarce, and people book to go to the theatre months in advance, this film tells the story of Lucas Steiner, the Jewish owner of the Montparnasse Theatre, who is forced into hiding and his gentile wife and lead actress Marion who takes over. Against a backdrop of tension and strains within the company, the theatre actors are rehearsing their next production, "Disappearance", which is to be directed from Lucas' own notes. The Last Metro won ten Cesar awards and was a nominee to an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
