I Was Nineteen

Based on personal experiments of director Konrad Wolf, this DEFA episodic drama tells a story of individual struggle to come to terms with his own past and identity. April 1945. 19 years old Gregor Hecker reaches the outskirts of Berlin as part of the Red Army's scouting team and having fled Germany with his family when he was 8, is forced to battle against men from his birth country. Through dealing with challenging situations, he grows more confident that not all hope is lost for post-war Germany. Made with the support of the Soviet Army and of the People's Army of the GDR.
