This drama takes place in the summer of 1940, at a time when France has fallen to the Nazis. The film deals with the issue of people’s relationships during the uncertain times of war. After the bombing of a refugee ship by German war planes, Odile, a young widow, and her two small children, escape into a nearby forest. There they meet Yvan, a resourceful shaven-headed young orphan. These four find shelter in an abandoned village house. In the absence of a father figure and in extraordinary times, the boundaries between adults and children are blurred and Odile, who before the war was a teacher, finds herself captivated by the resourceful youth. Nominated for the ‘Golden Palm’ at the 2003 Cannes Festival and for the Cesar (French Oscar).
