This drama tells a story of Feigele Abramovitz (Christina Ricci), a Jewish girl in 1927 Russia that escapes with her father from the pogroms to England. While her father travels to America seeking foe an employment, she is entrusted with a pious English couple, her name is changed to Suzy and she is forbade to speak Yiddish. 10 years later, Suzy who was endowed with singing talent, which she inherited from her father, moves to Paris and joins the opera choir founded by a local promoter. She falls in love with a Gypsy horse attendant and shares an attic with Lola (Cate Blanchett), a Russian ballerina wishing to marry any rich man and makes every effort to draw the attention of Dante (John Turturro), an Italian tenor in the opera. With the Nazi occupation of Paris, Dante shows up as a very keen supporter of Mussolini and explores his hate to Jews and Gypsies. Suzy’s life is bound to change. The soundtrack of the film combines Italian opera, Gypsies melodies and Yiddish Klezmer.
