New York 1 News, CBS Network (New York evening news programme with Dan Rather), CNN Network (The World Today), MSNBC News and CBS News (Sunday morning), on the new reopening of the synagogue in the town of Oswiecim in South Poland, known today as Auschwitz. Fifty years after its closure, the synagogue was opened with the assistance of The AJCF (Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation), New York. During the war the Nazis used the synagogue for storing weapons. Renovation of the synagogue was done based on people’s memories of it. Articles from the original synagogue that were found nearby were brought to the new one. The synagogue was dedicated to the Jewish community of the town who lived there before the Holocaust. The last local Jew died at the beginning of 2000 and today there are no Jews left there. The act of opening the synagogue is more symbolic than anything else. Includes testimonies, photographs and short extracts from the archival footage of the liberation of the camp.
