Episodes 1 to 3 in a 6-part documentary series produced by the BBC that deals with Auschwitz, the largest concentration and death camp among the Nazi concentration camps. Includes interivews with almost 100 survivors and former SS men, archival films, dramatic reconstruction an computer simulation. Episode 1, "Surprising Beginnings" deals with the establishment of the camp in the territory of the of the Polish town Oswiecim and its first activities under the leadership of Rudolf Hoess. Episode 2, "Orders and Initiatives", deals with enlargement of the camp starting in the fall of 1941 and experiments with more efficient and discrete methods of mass murder. Episode 3, "Factories of Death" deals with the activity of the camp in 1942, the significant year of the "Final Solution" when death transports arrive from all of Europe and the new crematorium in the camp works at full capacity. Likewise this episode deals with the activity of the camp's new physician, Dr. Mengele.
