This documentary presents the biography of Konrad Adenauer, the First Chancellor of West Germany (1949-1963). Before the war, Adenauer was a member of the Central Party and between 1917 and 1933 he served as mayor of Cologne. As a Catholic, he opposed the Nazis and in March 1933, was removed from his post and even arrested on two occasions. In his role as Chancellor, Adenauer finalized reparation payments with Israel. He liaised with Moscow regarding the release of prisoners of war and initiated reconciliation with France. The period when he served is characterized as one of prosperity and cultural and political freedom in the West. Includes photographs and archival footage.
