The story of a German officer who was appointed to be the liaison officer with the Romanian Infantry Division that was attacked by Russian tanks and infantry and sent to the front-line in Stalingrad. On the arrival of the severe Russia winter, the German sixth army was surrounded, the fighting in Stalingrad itself turned into a "house to house" combat and the war turned into a fight against hunger and cold. The personality of the German officer was absolutely altered in spite of the years connected with the Nazi education. Authentic archive films producing evidence of the war on the oriental front were incorporated in the film. The film was awarded the prize of the best German film of the year 1958.
