During the years leading up to World War II, the citizens of Japan were encouraged to look upon their Emperor as a god. This divine loyalty to their leader was transferred to the battlefield, where soldiers and Kamikaze pilots were willing to fight to the death rather than face defeat or capture. As the allies gained the upper hand, the self-destructive tactics of the Japanese grew more extreme.
