The area belonged to the Principality of Birkenfeld, which was part of the Grand Duchy (Grossherzogtum) of Oldenburg in northern Germany, although it was geographically included in the territories of the Rhine Province (Rheinprovinz) of the Kingdom of Prussia from 1834 onwards. After World War I, the duke abdicated his throne, and the territories of the Principality of Birkenfeld, including the Nohfelden / Türkismühle area, were made part of the St. Wendel district in the Saar region.
