Written in von Rundstedt's Nuremberg prison cell at the request of Dr. G.M. Gilbert, the prison psychologist, the essay argues that Hitler lost the war because he did not listen to the General Staff but to "irresponsible laymen in the Nazi Party and propaganda circles".
