Family deported to the Łódź ghetto; witness in infancy smuggled out of the ghetto with his brother, both swathed in blankets, and placed with non-Jews; parents escape and are led to them; wandering from hideout to hideout; collaborators discover parents' concealment pit; unsuccessful attempt to surrender parents to the Gestapo and escape into forests east of Lublin; acute hunger; mother sets out in search of food and disappears; brother dies of hunger; witness captured with father by a German soldier and taken to a killing trench; escaping from the trench at night after several unsuccessful attempts; crawling to a nearby village; adoption by a childless family; unexpected encounter with mother in December 1944; taken to mother in Lublin and living withi her from January to May 1945; placed in an orphanage in Łódź; exfiltration into Slovakia; moving to Prague and then to Feldafing with help from the Bricha organization and the Hashomer Hatzair movement; joining the Zvi Brandeis ma'apilim (illegal immigrants) commune; illegal immigration to Eretz Israel aboard the HaMaapil HaAlmoni in January 1946; deportation to Cyprus, immigration to Eretz Israel in October 1947; rehabilitation and adjustment to life in Eretz Israel.
