Offspring of an Orthodox religious family in Dombrowice; attends a Hebrew-speaking Tarbut school; Soviet occupation ensues in 1939; commerce nationalized; Hebrew as language of instruction is replaced with Yiddish; German occupation ensues in June 1941; banished to Dombrowice ghetto; dispossession and shunning imposed by rabbis of Dombrowice against those refusing to surrender their property; Jews in the ghetto rounded up and sent toward a railroad station; witness and family escape from the deportation convoy into a nearby forest; a group of families forms; life in the family camp in Belorussia; witness's parents murdered by Ukrainian gangs in spring 1943; the group heads for the partisans; develops typhus and receives aid from a Ukrainian; help from Polish partisans headed by Wanda Wasilewska; help from a Jewish partisan from Lwów; children smuggled to the marsh area near Pinsk in early 1944; the front closes in; liberation by Red Army forces in May–June 1944; witness taken to a Russian children's home in Rowne; location shelled and witness is transferred to the children's home in Otwock in mid-1945; attends a Polish school; antisemitism; exfiltrated from Otwosk by a member of Hashomer Hatzair and placed in a movement-affiliated children's home in Lower Silesia; learning about Eretz Israel; crossing into Poland and Czechoslovakia; life in Prague and Marseille; immigration to Eretz Israel aboard the Tati as a participant in Aliya Dalet in March 1948; immigration to Israel with a family of rabbis; rehabilitation and adjustment to life in Israel.
