Testimony of Pepi (Kahlenbeg) Laufer, born in Storojinet, Romania, 1920, regarding her experiences in Storojinet, Bessarabia, Balta and in an orphanage in Bucharest Her childhood in a traditional family, including attending a Romanian school and high school; attitude of the local population toward the Jews. Outbreak of the war; Soviet occupation; Romanian occupation; concentration of the Jews in a school without food and water, for several days; deportation to the Storojinet Ghetto; deportation to Cernauti in freight trains, including overcrowding and hunger; arrival to Bessarabia; march on foot including mortality and sleeping in stables and granaries, for approximately six weeks; arrival to Balta, in Transnistria; death of her father due to dysentery illness; death of her mother due to dysentery illness; death of her younger brother; [life in Balta including] agricultural labor; move to an orphanage in Bucharest [along with other orphans]; liberation by the Red Army. Life after the war; aliya to Israel, 1959; life in Israel.
