The witness: son of a Jewish mother and an Evangelist father; antisemitism by teacher and pupils when witness was in first grade; father transfers him to a Jewish school; family moves from apartment to apartment to conceal its Jewishness; authorities order father to divorce his wife; father sent to penal labor in 1935–1937; brother bullied in the street; brother immigrates to Eretz Israel in 1938; Jewish-owned shops demolished; father works as a barber; hears from soldiers about the concentration camps; hides the yellow star in the street; disregards racial laws and has an affair with a German woman; does forced labor at a factory in Berlin in 1943–1945; alternates between Germany and Israel from 1949 to 1980.
