Testimony of Arie Leib Vered, born in Roman, Romania, 1921, regarding his experiences in Bucharest, in detention in Vacaresti; in detention in Zilava and in detention in Fetesti Family background; family makes aliya to Eretz Israel, 1923; return to Romania due to economic difficulties; move to Bucharest; displays of antisemitism; joining the Maccabi youth movement. Burning of the store and closing of the business, 1940; pogroms; rescue of his family; unsuccessful aliya attempt to Eretz Israel; return to Bucharest; detention by Romanian gendarmes; detention for 30 days for lack of possession of identification papers, 1943; release; raid of Romanian gendarmes [on the house]; detention in the Vacaresti jail; air-raids [by the Allied forces], April 1944; put on military trial for [not reporting for] the draft to forced labor; life in the Zilava jail; transfer to the Fetesti jail; labor as an orderly in burying the dead and in sanitation; liberation by the Red Army, September 1945.
