Testimony of Itzhak Monnikendam Hulata, born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 1927, regarding his experiences in Amsterdam and in hiding in Varsseveld while hidden by the Colenbrander family (Righteous Among the Nations) His childhood in a secular family. German Army occupation of the Netherlands, 1940; life under German occupation including the imposition of anti-Jewish restrictions; termination of studies; capture of his older brother during an "Aktion" against young people, June 1941; receives a notice regarding the death of his brother in Mauthausen; deportation of Jews from the outlying areas to Amsterdam; contact with the Dutch underground; move to a hiding place on a farm in Varsseveld; search by Germans [for Jews]; deportation of his parents to Westerbork; in hiding on the farm of the Colenbrander family (later recognized as Righteous Among the Nations) in Varsseveld; liberation. Move back to Amsterdam; illegal aliya attempt to Eretz Israel on the "Biriah" ship, 1946.
