Outbreak of the war; deportation with the rest of the Jews to Transnistria; march to Hotin; from there to Mogilev near Bershad, and back to Mogilev; rescue of the family by a Romanian officer in exchange for payment; return to Cernauti; life until the end of the war.
Unsuccessful attempt to reach Bucharest; arrest by the Soviet authorities on the charge of espionage; collection of money by the Cernauti Jews to effect his release; help from the ultra-Orthodox; aliya to Israel, 1950.
