The witness' father owns a factory that is essential to the Slovaks; rescue of the family from deportation to Majdanek; German occupation and escape of the family to Bystrica, summer 1944; life in hiding in a bunker dug by a Jew named Neuman in the area under the responsibility of Jozef Kurbel, the forester, and with his agreement; life in the bunker with his parents and four other Jews; receiving food from Karbel and his two daughters; details about Jozef Kurbel (later recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations), a Communist humanist who did not want to take payment for his deeds; arrest of Kurbel by the Germans after being informed on, and severe torture undergone in Novaky; release of Karbel and the burning of his home; care for those in hiding by Kurbel's cousin; liberation by the Red Army, 1945.
Return to Zabokreky; departure for Bari, Italy, by train, 1949; aliya on the ship, "Atzmaut", to Haifa, 1949.
