Testimony of Joel Julius Maringer Lavi, born in Cologne, Germany, 1920, regarding his experiences in Cologne, in aliya training in the Berlin area and his aliya to Eretz Israel, 1935 Life before the war; religious Orthodox family; his father is a carpenter; his father is a World War I disabled veteran; witness attends a German school and learns in a "heder"; Zionist activities in the Hanoar Hamizrachi movement; activities in the Hashomer Hatzair movement. Nazi rise to power, 1933; displays of violence toward Jews; removal of the Jews from the circles of life; concentration of members of the youth movements in a building, under the supervision of the Gestapo; receives knowledge concerning the transfer of people who "oppose the regime" to Dachau camp; activities in the Hashomer Hatzair movement; life in aliya training in the Berlin area; aliya to Eretz Israel on the "Galilah" ship, 1935. Receives knowledge regarding the murder of his family (apparently in Auschwitz), 1942.
