Testimony of Norbert Weinstein, born in Cernauti, Romania, 1929, regarding his experiences in the Cernauti Ghetto and his deportation to Transnistria His childhood in a traditional family with an orientation toward German culture; rise in nationalism and the weakening of personal security. German occupation of Poland, 1939; refugees from Poland; confiscation of valuables; Soviet occupation, 22 June 1940; Soviet education; German and Romanian occupation, and the Soviets flee, 1941; decrees and bans; deportation to the Cernauti Ghetto; Cernauti Ghetto life including overcrowding; preparations for his bar-mitzvah, done secretly; deportation to Transnistria; transfer on a freight train until Atachi, in autumn; robbery of their valuables; transfer to Mogilev and then to Bershad or Skazinets (the witness does not remember exactly); escape back to Mogilev; deterioration in the food conditions; barter trade using clothing and jewelry; hunger; terrible sanitary conditions; approach of the front, and liberation by the Red Army, spring 1944. Return to Cernauti; move to Bucharest; aliya to Israel, 1950; absorption and rehabilitation.
