German occupation, 1944; his oldest brother is drafted to a labor battalion; in hiding in the home of a Hungarian woman; move to a marked house; work digging anti-tank trenches; hospitalization; transfer on foot during air-raids and shooting; life in a Jewish orphanage; liberation by the Red Army, January 1945. Joins the Zionist movement; unsuccessful aliya attempt to Eretz Israel, 1946; detention in Cyprus; aliya to Eretz Israel, September 1947.
