Red Army retreat; German occupation; robbery of Jewish homes by local residents; forcing families to go down to the cellar and shooting them; murder of his mother; escape and finding a hiding place in the home of non-Jewish neighbors; he is informed on and arrested; escape from the police station; finds a hiding place in the home of a non-Jewish woman; deportation to Atachi under police guard; transfer to an orphanage in Mogilev-Podolski; capture of his father by the German Army; his father's work as a translator; chance meeting with his father; volunteers for forced labor in Yampol; transfer to Yampol; life in Yampol including peeling potatoes in a military kitchen; cares for horses belonging to Romanian officers; changes his name; joins a group of orphans; life in Constanta; escape to Turkey. Aliya to Eretz Israel, 1944; life in a Youth Aliyah religious institution.
