Testimony of Emerich Imre Gáspár, born in Szeged, Hungary, 1926, regarding his experiences in a labor battalion in Szeged, Veszprem, Szombathely and Schachendorf Life before the war; death of his father and mother. Life until 1944; German occupation, March 1944; drafted to a labor battalion on his 18 birthday, 06 June 1944; life in a labor battalion camp; labor moving wheelbarrows of sand to protect the ammunition storerooms; evacuation of the camp, 15 October 1944; transfer in a death march; escape and wanderings in a forest; escape from the forest and capture by Hungarian gendarmes; transfer to a prison in Veszprem; life in prison including stealing food from store rooms; release; identification by a Hungarian officer; transfer to a prison in Szombathely; life in the local prison; trial and conviction; receives a pardon on the birthday of the ruler; escape; joins a labor battalion; transfer in a march to Schachendorf; life in Schachendorf under the supervision of the TODT organization; labor clearing weeds; does not receive food; typhus; life with an unclear conscious until the liberation by the Red Army, April 1945. Return to the family home; aliya to Israel, 1951.
