Outbreak of the war; drafted into a Hungarian Army labor battalion; building fortifications along the front and laying railroad tracks; harsh discipline including corporal punishment; obtains food through barter with the Ukrainians and Romanians; several escapes from the camp; escape to forests, 1944; meets Jewish partisans; housing in Ukrainian homes in the winter; labor as a translator; labor in a hospital.
