German occupation, April 1941; move to Split with help from a Moslem friend; move to Vela Luka; life in Vela Luka; relations with the local population; contact with Jewish refugees; move on rafts to Bari, September 1943; life in Saint Croce, June 1944; receives a visa to the United States from the Emergency Refugee Shelter organization; move to the United States on the "Henry Gibbons" ship; life on board the ship along with wounded US Army soldiers and German POWs; visit by Ruth Gruber and Eleanor Roosevelt; end of the war.
