Outbreak of the war, 1939; Soviet occupation; life in Grodno including work as a welder; German occupation, 1941; escape to the Soviet Union with a friend; return to Grodno; life using the false identity of a non-Jew; meeting with family members; obtains an apartment from his sister's teacher; deportation to the Grodno Ghetto; ghetto life including labor in a shoe factory and as a translator for the German police; deportation and escape to Bialystok, 1943; deportation of his parents to Auschwitz; life in Bialystok using a false identity including carpentry work until May 1944; joins the partisans; life with the partisans including sabotage of railroad tracks and finding a hiding place in a forest; drafted into the Red Army; combat in Berlin.
