Testimony of Yan Steiner Hudi, born in Mukacevo, Czechoslovakia, 1926, regarding his experiences in Topolcany, Novaky, with the underground in Bratislava and Goerlitz Life before the war in Bratislava; his father is an officer in the Czechoslovakian Army; attends a state school; Hashomer Hatzair activities; aliya of his sister to Eretz Israel, 1938; move to a Jewish school, 1939. Deportation to Topolcany, late 1940; life in Topolcany; life with his mother and brother after the escape of his father; escape to farm owned by Jews, 1941; life on the farm; deportation of the family to Novaky, April 1942; camp life including agricultural labor; escape to Bratislava; escape to a camp; underground activities including weapons training; participates in the Slovak National Uprising including guard duty on the training camp; combat as a machine gunner; wounded, November 1944; escape and taken captive by the German Army; deportation to Goerlitz; camp life and help from Jewish Brigade POWs; beating by a German soldier; killing of the soldier with help from a friend and burying him in the snow; escape with a group; liberation by the US Army. Move to England; joins the Czechoslovakian Brigade; release from the Army, 1946; return to Bratislava; joins the Haganah; serves as a tank instructor; aliya to Israel, 1948.
