Soviet occupation, 1939-1940; authorities take over food reserves; school under Soviet administration; deportation of wealthy Jews to Siberia; air-raids on the town hall, 1941; burning of houses; evacuation to Zelena; Soviet retreat; life in the village using a false identity; witness is informed on, and taken into custody by the authorities; death sentence; amnesty; return to Lipcani; arrest; transfer from place to place; deportation to Mogilev-Podolski; life in Mogilev-Podolski; transfer to Kopaygorod; typhus and scarlet fever; death of his mother; labor on a pig farm; transfer to the German occupied area; children disguise themselves as Poles; meeting with Soviet partisans. Return to Romanian controlled area; transfer to an orphanage funded by Swiss Jews; medical treatment; children scattered among various families; aliya attempt to Eretz Israel; sinking of one of three illegal immigration ships; transfer to Turkey; aliya to Eretz Israel, 1944.
