His father is drafted into the Hungarian Army as an ambulance driver, 1940; German occupation, 1944; yellow badge; sister is hidden by a Christian family; move to a marked house; work as a newspaper vender; deportation and detention in the Great Synagogue in Budapest, September 1944; release after about 24 hours; obtains a Swiss protective passport; moves to a Swiss protected house; removal of the yellow badge; work as a courier delivering letters and messages among the protected houses in the ghetto; murder of Jews along the banks of the Danube River; his father's escape from a death march; liberation by the Red Army, January 1945. Antisemitism after the war; name change from Shvartz to Horshani, based on his father's hometown; aliya to Israel with help from the Bericha organization, 1949.
