Outbreak of the war, 1939; escape to the East with his older brother, early 1940; life in an orphanage in Grodno; Communist sympathisers; German occupation, 1941; rescue from a selection; using a false identity joins a German military unit at the Russian front as a translator; life in Tallin, 1942; transfer to the Hitler-Jugend boarding school in Braunschweig, summer 1942; dormitory life using a false identity; move to Lodz, 1943; unsuccessful attempt to visit his family in the ghetto; life as a Nazi youth in Germany until the end of the war, 1945.
