Testimony of Julian (Goldman) Gilead, born in Warsaw, Poland, 1930, regarding his experiences in the Warsaw Ghetto, on the Aryan side of Warsaw and Auschwitz From a middle-class, assimilated family; an educated family; displays of antisemitism; studies in a Jewish-Polish school; the German invasion into Poland, 01 September 1939; Germans reside in their apartment; escape to an uncle in Krzemieniec; his mother is arrested at the border; escape to Vilna; his father returns to the Warsaw Ghetto, 1941; his mother, sister and relatives return to the ghetto; ghetto life; earning a livelihood; learns in the ghetto; "Aktions"; escape from an "Aktion"; his parents' death; his sister is smuggled to a village; the death of two other family members; escape with the uncle to his caregiver (Celina) to Warsaw , January 1943; life as a Polish street child until the Warsaw Polish Uprising in the summer of 1944; observation of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising from the outside; life in a village while working in secret to distill alcohol; deportation to Auschwitz camp and his separation from Celina, and then bringing her food from the other side of the fence; work pulling wagons; life with the Warsaw street urchins; fear that his Jewishness would be discovered when he showered; beaten, as punishment; the Sonderkommando uprising; suppression of the uprising; the uprisers are executed; hospitalization in a clinic together with dwarfs and twins; evacuation of the camp with the approach of the Red army; transfer to Berlin for forced labor; air-raids; liberation by the Red Army, May 1945.
