Religious home; his father is a storeroom clerk in a sugar factory; studies in a Yiddish elementary school; night high school; studies physics and mathematics in a university.
Drafted to Red Army as a medic on the front near Kharkov, June 1941; after wounded, sent to an intelligence course, 1942; parachuted over enemy lines to spy; attached to a German section in an electrical engineering brigade as a translator; contacts with Soviets and partisans, conveying weapons and information; transfer of brigade to Italy, July 1943; end of his role as a translator in that unit but continues his activities and maintains contacts; end of the war, May 1945.
Activity on behalf of Aliya Bet; aliya to Eretz Israel, 1946, and enlists in the IDF.
